National Home Performance Conference
Sustainability as a Core Value Changes Everything
By KLARA KAUFMAN
Leading with sustainability as a core value opens an organization up to growth. Urban Habitat Initiatives President Kimberly Vermeer and her co-author Walker Wells explored this topic by featuring Austin-based Foundation Communities as a “Green In Practice” example in their book, Blueprint for Greening Affordable Housing, Revised Edition. Foundation Communities is a leader in green affordable multifamily housing development. Foundation Communities extends green benefits to residents by implementing green practices in property operations and investing in resident education to create a culture of green living.
Kim will dive further into this topic at the National Home Performance Conference, in a session with Katelynn Essig, Sustainability Director at Foundation Communities. The session will give provide insights on Foundation Communities’ green operations strategies and results, and how sustainability values influenced their response to COVID-19.
Green practices have been critical to Foundation Communities’ response to COVID-19, with invaluable knowledge about indoor air quality, ventilation and cleaning materials informing strategies to maintain healthy environments. A strong history of resident engagement has facilitated understanding to meet residents’ needs in this time of crisis.
This session will be offered virtually and “on demand” for participants. The conference will take place from April 12th through 16th, bringing together contractors, weatherization professionals, trainers, program administrators, energy auditors, and others working in residential energy efficiency.
